Moving Tips in Honor of National Moving Month

Moving is tough, but there are certain steps that you can take to make the process easier. Whether it's time to downsize or you're buying your first new home, following a few simple tips can take your move from a mess to a (semi) breeze.

Make a List

The thought of moving is overwhelming, and keeping a list helps you to break down tasks in a manageable way. List everything that comes to mind as you go through the moving process — people you need to contact, notes for your Realtor and mortgage lender, donations you need to make, etc. Don't try to remember small tasks — everything goes on the list, and everything gets checked off when it's done.

Declutter First

You don't really want to move non-winning lottery tickets, old gift bags, and half-eaten bags of Halloween candy to your new home, do you? Didn't think so. Take time to declutter before you begin the moving process, allowing you to move only the things that you want to keep into your new space.

Work in Chunks

Set aside an hour or two a day for moving tasks — and then resume your normal life. It's easy to get overwhelmed when you take on too much, and moving is stressful enough. At least a month before you plan to move, start working in small chunks. You'll be amazed at home much you can get done with just a little bit of time each day.

Consider the Essentials

When you get into a packing groove, it can be tempting to clear out room after room. Before you get too overzealous, consider the things that you'll need for your first week in your new home. Packing a box full of clothes, toiletries, essential kitchen supplies (like a few pots and pans), chargers, etc. can go a long way in helping you enjoy a low-stress unpacking process.
