During the spring and summer, Savannah is a sports paradise with its many hometown teams, such as baseball’s Savannah Bananas, basketball’s Savannah State Tigers and rugby’s Savannah Shamrocks.
Watching these local teams makes for great fun for the entire family. Get more information and view schedules.
The city also plays host to a variety of special sporting events. Here’s a sampling:
The city will be even more exciting when it hosts the 2020 and 2021 NAIA Men’s and Women’s La Crosse National Invitational. The Invitational has a new home at the Memorial Stadium, which underwent renovation in 2017 and is now a lighted stadium seating 5,000 fans. Other renovations include a press box and a building addition that features a field house, locker rooms and concessions. Also enhancing the fan experience is a digital scoreboard with high-definition video capability.
NAIA stands for National Association for Intercollegiate Athletics, so as with all college sports, these athletes play their hearts out and are great fun to watch, whether you are a Lacrosse expert or a first-time spectator.
In April, the Savannah Golf Championship will have the usual crowd of spectators at the Deer Creek course for the third time, as it is a premier spot in golf’s PGA Korn Ferry Tour, for which the winner receives the coveted seersucker jacket.
This is a developmental tour that features professional golfers who have either not reached the PGA Tour level yet or have done so but failed to earn enough FedEx points to remain on that level. The Korn Ferry Tour is akin to the minor leagues in baseball. It features terrific athletes who just need a little more practice to join or rejoin PGA. However, they are no less exciting to watch.
This event is held one week before the Master’s Tournament in Augusta, making April in Georgia a very special month for golfers and spectators alike. Savannah and its environs, due to the golf-friendly weather, is home to many excellent golf courses and attracts golfers throughout the year from all over the state, the country and even the world.
For runners, there are endless local marathons and half-marathons as well as the annual expo offering the opportunity to explore cutting-edge running gear, sports apparel, equipment, and health and nutritional information – among many other athletic-inspired vendors and events.
Settle into your new Landmark 24 Homes community in Savannah this winter, with its many home designs, floor plans and outdoor amenities, and you’ll be ready to enjoy the city’s exciting sports scene by the spring.
