Perhaps you purposely bought your home because it included a spare bedroom or perhaps a family member moved out and now you have been left with an empty room. No matter the case, an extra space is a wonderful thing to have in your home because of the versatility it provides. Not sure what to do with it? The first thing is to decide on a purpose for the room, and the purpose depends on what you and your family do for fun, hobbies or recreation.
This is an obvious choice for you if you have many overnight or longer-term guests. The room should be set up like any other bedroom in the house but with the addition of a luggage rack or empty space in the closet. If you have guests stay with you only occasionally, make the room into a dual-purpose space, perhaps as a bedroom/office.
Place a daybed with storage drawers underneath in the room along with a desk that also has built-in storage for files, office necessities and whatever computer equipment you need for your work. Make it cheerful with paint, artwork and decorative accessories and make it comfortable with an ergonomic desk chair.
Game Room with Mini Bar
If you seldom have overnight guests, a game room could be an ideal entertainment space for family and friends. Create a mini-bar with a small table, bar stools, mini-fridge and wall shelving for glasses and bar accessories. Add a game table with cup holders and chairs for card and board games if that’s what your family and guests are into possibly a pool table if space allows. Install a large flat screen TV on the wall and add comfortable seating to view those big games, and no one will ever want to leave the room.
Home Gym or Yoga Studio
If anyone in the household regularly works out at a commercial gym, this is a great use for an extra room and a money-saving one as well. Gym goers know what equipment they use and just about any fitness machine can be purchased for in-home use.
If a regular gym is not for you, consider a yoga retreat with sparse furnishings, soft music, calming greenery and even a waterfall to enhance meditation and relaxation.
Crafts and Hobby Room
For all you needle workers, sewers, scrapbookers and other people of creative pursuits, a designated space where you can lose yourself in your passion is a dream come true. Put in a table that will serve well as a workspace and line the walls with shelves where you can organize and store supplies for your work. Make sure the lighting is right for you to work easily and comfortably. Add a display case or gallery wall to show and store your creations.
All of these bonus-room ideas will not only add to the quality of your life but also to the resale value of your home.
