Make It Pop: Putting Bold Colors Into Your Interior Design

May 19, 2023

Bold colors can add energy and personality to any interior design, but they can also be challenging to get right. Considering how bold colors are currently taking over interior design trends this year, they can definitely be something to play around with.

Here are some tips to help you mix bold colors successfully into your interior design.

Start With a Neutral Base

Neutral colors such as white, beige, or gray can help balance out bold colors and create a calming background for your design. Having too much of a good thing is something to keep in mind when designing with bold colors; starting with a neutral base can therefore be a good thing, especially since it can help make the bold color even bolder.

Choose a Color Palette

Choose a few strong hues that go well together, and use them consistently throughout the space. You can create a color palette by using a color wheel to find colors that are opposite each other or colors that complement each other.

Use Bold Colors Sparingly

Too much of a bold color can be overwhelming, so it's best to use it sparingly. Choose one or two bold colors and use them as accent colors, such as an accent wall or a piece of furniture, like a brightly colored sofa or armchair. Overlapping too many bold colors will make a space feel smaller and more cluttered, which can be distracting and uncomfortable to be in. If you feel like this is happening, try to take one of the objects away and see if it helps alleviate the tension caused by the overlapping.

Balance Bold Colors With Textures

Bold colors can be balanced by using textures, such as a plush velvet sofa, a textured throw pillow, or even a fluffy blanket. These textures can also add depth and interest to a space quite easily.

Mix Patterns

Mixing patterns with bold colors can also help balance out the design. For example, a bold-colored sofa can be paired with patterned throw pillows or curtains, which can add interest to the space. Starting with the pattern and seeing what colors are already present can help you tie everything together with ease.

Be Mindful of Lighting

Lighting can greatly impact the way bold colors appear in a room. Natural light can enhance the vibrancy of bold colors, while artificial light can make them look more muted. Keep in mind how much lighting the room gets and where it comes from when planning where you want to put the bold color to make it stand out that much more.

Don’t Be Afraid to Experiment

When working with bold colors, it's important to be open to experimenting. Try different combinations and see what works best for you! Remember that interior design is about creating a space that feels comfortable and is reflective of your personal style, and nothing is set in stone. You can always try one way to add bold color and see if it works for you, and if it doesn’t, change it up the next time you get a chance. Play around with it and find something you like that speaks to you and your style.

What Our Homebuyers Are Saying

Landmark 24 was GREAT when we built our home in Pooler. From the beginning to the closing the people were helpful, things went (almost) according to schedule and since living in the home for almost a year we haven't had any problems and know the home was built right! I'm very thankful for the work they've done, they are continuing to build in our neighborhood and overall the professionalism is wonderful.
